Hayden Kobza: Investigating the Unknown

My name is Hayden Kobza, and I am a junior journalism major at Southern Adventist University. I currently work as the managing editor for the Southern Accent, our college newspaper. My love of journalism stems from a childhood curiosity about discovering the unknown and forgotten.

Outside of writing for the Southern Accent, the student newspaper at Southern Adventist University, my primary work is photography. My style has been influenced by street culture and the old masters of painting. I believe in telling stories that matter and prefer to write investigative pieces. I am so excited to work on this research project this semester, as my research partners are also my colleagues at the Accent.

With the rise in traffic, I have seen Collegedale’s growth firsthand. In 2022, when I first came to town as a college student, there was mild traffic. And now, almost three years later, there is a substantial morning and evening rush. My biggest goal for this project is to look at the data to see where people moving to Collegedale come from.

Along with data analysis, it is essential to see what housing development projects are happening in the city and how local government and project developers will keep up with the demand.

Are farmers selling their land to developers? Is there a limit to Collegedale’s growth? Who is falling through the cracks and forgotten? Why do people want to live here? My team and I will seek answers to these questions, along with many more.

We will bring you visuals, maps, photos and videos along with the human story so you know what the scoop is on the growth of Collegedale.
